Which bags are better

Hi. I am new to this forum and I don't know much about camera bags. I am in search of a camera bag for my husband, but I don't know which ones are the best. I looked through the "Show me your bag" thread and there are awesome choices. I see that many people choose Lowepro and Tamrac. Are there more brands out there that are better than these? If so, why? What is the difference between Lowepro and Tamrac? Basically, I just want an idea of which bags are known for better cushion, available space, and comfort. I know that there are different types of camera bags, but I am specifically interested in backpacks. If someone can help me answer these questions, I appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

i have a lowepro ex 180, which is just awesome, so much space, but sadly i may be running out of room in the beast of a bag, considering things are always going in but never coming out right now i have a flash, batteries, canon a630, and my pentax in there, plus wires and other junk, and everything fits like a charm

i got 2 tamracs before that, but returned them both cause they were crap (not saying tamrac is crap i bet they have nice bags) the inside material was so rough and edgy i was really worried about scratching my equipment, this lowepro is so much nicer

so ya, theres my little story

ps turns out henrys still has some on ebay LOWEPRO EX 180 PHOTO/VIDEO BAG/FOREST GREEN/NEW - (eBay.ca item 280193672046 end time 25-Jan-08 18:53:29 EST)

I've been looking for a good camera bag for business travel. I think I have narrowed it down to this one but not sure yet.

Sierra Messenger Bag - Modern Messenger Bags & Laptop Computer Bags for Traveling Professionals - Military Ops Series | NaneuPro.com

I did look at others on this site, as well as Thinktank, Tamarac, and Lowepro and others. Use the search "bags" on this site and you will see other discussions as well.

You need to think how one would use it and if he will need his computer as well. I'm a business man and go into professional medical offices when I'm traveling and don't want to have a backpack, but many of the roller based suitcases have this large insert that fits only camera gear and computer but leaves little room for other stuff. I will travel just with the K10d and 1-2 lens and cards and maybe a monopod.

I'm personally a fan of Crumpler's myself. They're expensive, but more thickly padded then any Lowepro or Tamrac I've ever had.

I have a Crumpler 5 Milliion Dollar Home bag, very nice and well constructed. Even filled you can't really tell that it's a camera bag. I can put my K10D with a lens on it along with two other medium to small lens. The where are two other pockets for small stuff. I also just like the attitude of the company.

Check out M-ROCK Camera Bags and Digital Camera Cases. They're not as well-known as Lowepro and Tamrac, but they're well-built and very versatile--their modular system is pretty cool. They've got everything including square shoulder bags, holster bags, sling bags, and backpacks.

Lets be honest here. When it comes to the more expensive, brand-name, bags, there are very few differences in quality, suitability of materials, construction, workmanship, and so on. In the end, it really comes down to the preference of the user, with nearly everyone having their own unique opinion as to the "perfect" bag.

If your husband is like most, he will go through several bags before finally settling on the one he prefers best. Most photographers (who've been at it for any length of time) have several unused bags stored away in closets, each claiming those bags will be used at some point in the future. Many also resort to different bags for different occasions (an everyday bag, a travel bag, etc). My everyday "go" bag is a Tamrac Expedition 5 backpack, but I also use a number of other bags, hard cases, and plastic storage boxes for other items (tools, location lighting equipment, props, etc).

So where does all this leave you? In the end, you may want to simply acknowledge the difficulty in choosing a bag and let your husband decide for himself. At least that would be my recommendation. If that's simply not an option, take a good look at the Tamrac backpack mentioned in the previous paragraph, chosen because it was the smallest backpack that would hold the K10D (with grip attached), while still allowing for some accessories. It can also be easily expanded in the future with accessory pouches. I also especially like the small (optional) pouches on the shoulder straps for a cellphone and MP3 player. Good luck.

Lowepro and Tamrac are to bags what Canon and Nikon are to cameras. If the store only carries two brands, it will likely be those.

I like Quantaray bags from Ritz camera, though I am willing to get a "big name" next time if warranted (for about 2X cost).

Thanks guys for the advice. I looked at all the bags and they just seem too expensive. I found this a camera bag, called Apollo. It is modeled after the Tamrac Summit, mostly used by skater/skateboarders. I gave this bag to him, and he absolutely loves it. If anyone is considering a bag that is less expensive but accomadates all the gear you have, then I personally like this. It's on ebay, if anyone wants to check it. (Type in Apollo Camera Backpack)

Thanks everyone.
