I recently purchased a SanDisk SD/HC ExtremeIII card, and have found that this card cannot be read in my computer's card reader unless it is first inserted into its accompanying MicroMate USB adapter - and then inserting the latter into one of my computer's USB ports.
Taking the card directly into the respective reader-slot, on my computer, causes my PC to freeze up. But just removing the card brings everything back to normal. Now, I had initially thought that the MicroMate adapter was provided for giving one the ability to transfer the card's data into a PC, that might not have had such a reader built-in, but that the card could be read on its own in a reader. All of my other SD cards function in the PC's reader without a problem. Should this be happening? I'd hate to think that losing (though I hope I don't) this MicroMate adapter would translate into my card being unusable - until such time as I could get my hands on another adapter. And I have no idea what one would cost if I had to purchase one separately.

I've seen both fail, although the reader is the frequent culprit. Try downloading directly from the camera and see what happens. If it works, I'd suggest a return/exchange - it could be the card or the adapter.

Perhaps a multi-card reader would be the alternative? Just make sure the reader is SDHC compatible.... !! Good luck.

I have this same exact problem. I just simply use the usb device it came with and have no problems. Matter of fact it is probably faster. My guess is this could be happening with older computers?

My guess is that the built in SD card reader in your computer is not compatible with SDHC cards... it is a slightly different format. Recall all the warnings about the SDHC cards only working in cameras and other devices specifically designed to handle them. Almost any external reader you can buy today is designed to handle SDHC media as well as plain old SD, so I wouldn't get too worked up about it...

Well that explains it then. It is lightening fast using the usb 2.0 so I am happy.

Some manufacturers have modified the drivers for their card readers to add support for SDHC cards to the existing SD card slot. Therefore, check for an updated driver for the card reader on your computer.

I got same problem.But solution very easy Sandisk coming with microreader and work very nice. Some older style notebook not match with this microreader/i had problem with my older Toshiba notebook /usb-port onthe backside my computer too deep sitting/But new front usb port computer no problem.I bought my SDHC included small microreader from CC cost me 32$
Work just fine. Also SanDisk ImageMate 5 in 1 Memory Card Reader/Writer (SDDR99A15)

cost 19$ work with both card as Sd andSDHC just fine
