Circular Polarizer Question

Having satisfied my LBA for the moment, I'm interested in adding a circular polarizer filter to my bag. I've got a Sigma 10-20 and a 17-70 (72mm and 77mm filter size respectively). I'm curious, do any of you use a polarizer with the newer style hoods in place? And if so, can a step from 72-to-77mm be used with the hood as well?
TIA

How do you mean newer style of hoods? If you mean Petal hoods, I use my CPF with the petal hood on my 18-125 and my Bigma (50-500) no worries.

Probably. However, it would make an already tight squeeze even tighter, meaning it would be even more difficult to rotate the polarizer as needed.

In my case, since a polarizer is most often used at right angles to the sun rather than in conditions where lens flare might be a real issue, I usually just drop the lens hood into the camera bag whenever a polarizer is used. As such, your question wouldn't even be an issue.

A lens hood that attaches to the lens casing can make adjustment of the CP filter very difficult or even impossible with it attached. However, a lens hood that screws into the CP filter can be used to adjust the CP filter by turning the hood, preferaby clockwise so it doesn't come loose. The Ritz Camera chain sells collapsible rubber hoods that work well for under $10 but 72mm seems to be the largest they carry. A local camera store should have a 77mm.

Thanks Stewart. I guess I've had the luxury of attaching the hood directly to the filter. But I have to agree, I usually use this filter when the sun is over my shoulder.

Thanks. I guess I wasn't 100% sure the "Circular" polarizers rotated. My PF for the old Takumar's rotated, but I don't know it that's why they're called circular (surely not because they're round? ).

This is a pretty good link if you want to know a bit more about how polarizers function. It even gives a tip on how to find out if your polarizer is a circular or a linear one (hint: it's done with a mirror).
