Focusing zone for split focus screen

I use KPS 1.3 magnifier + Nikon K3 focusing screen from focusingscreen.com on my k-x and it works most of the time.

However. there are occasions when I miss the focus despite of the split screen perfectly aligned and micro prism area completely transparent. Since it works the rest of the times, this seems to be a technique issue. One thing which I noticed is that there is a small zone under which split screen remains aligned and even micro prism area remains transparent. This zone seems to be larger than DOF at f2.8 and larger & probably this seems to be an issue. If I slightly move the camera to change focus point, split remains in the focus. Just wondering if split screens are designed for shooting with particular aperture (say f4 & below).

Can someone help me understand what am I missing and where I need to improve.

Thanks
Yusuf

I think the issue is that the ability to see a misallignment of the split screen is , as you indicate is less than the depth of field of a fast lens wide open.

I find that the dual split image that I use tends to show misallignment better an a single split, because it moves a "slice" out of line and this seems ever to see than a single discontimutiy in the single split image

This is, however a much smaller difference than the modern stock focusing screens that ally area not good for a lens faster than about F5.6
