waist/belt pack zipper location question

I have a waist/belt pack from the 80's, which (barely) holds a Kxxx with one lens mounted, plus two more lenses, and miscellaneous stuff in the small front pocket. I've been considering replacing it, but I'm wondering if anyone has a waist/belt pack with a zipper on the body side, and if so, whether it's possible to actually zip/unzip with the pack attached to your waist. While I understand the possible advantages of an outward-opening top for a conventional bag, I'm not seeing it for a waist/belt pack. Anyone have experience with the inside zippers (outward opening top) on a waist/belt pack?

Thanks

Paul

I use a belt pack when shooting motorsport. It is a Tamrac and has a flap over the top that secures with a clip. It also has a double zippered top with velcro can be accessed without removing the flap, but I never used that. It is getting a little long in the tooth and I was considering replacing it, but I saw the issue you are talking about... I wouldn't go for it myself.

Are you talking about something like this? when it is on your waist the hinge is on the side away from your body and the lid opens away from your body. I have the earlier version of this bag and I think its great, this way the lid isn't in the way when you open it and need to get in the bag.

Sort of, but the models I'm thinking of have weather-shielded zippers running around the inside. The pack you have linked to seems to have one zipper that's actually on the top of the pack - I'm not sure if that's the main zipper or the zipper below that is . I wouldn't object to the bag lid opening away from me, but I can't imaging how it's possible to zip/unzip on the side that's tightly gripping your body.

The weather sealed zipper is the one that opens/closes the lid. The one that runs around the bag that looks "normal" is the one for the expanding section to give you more room. The removable storm cover may negate the need for weather sealed zippers. Do you have a link to a type of pack you are thinking of?

An example would be the discontinued Tamrac 705 (not a typo - the current 706 is entirely different.) There is an expired listing on ebay for a 705 with photos:

Brand New with Tags Tamrac 705 Contured Quarter Moon Photo Hip Pack | eBay

I could post photos of my bag later, but you'd have to imagine the zipper being on the inside vs. outside.
