I have one and have used it on my K-x and K-5 without incident. I asked the same thing here and was told it was safe, and it has proven to be. It's completely manual and has 2 settings as I recall (I'm at work) High and Low. They are set with the switch on the side.

The Pentax AF16 is safe to use. I'm still using my AF160 (later version) with K10D, K7, and Ricoh GXR.

- Attach the flash to the camera.
- Camera: mode M (or X), shutter speed: 1/180 sec or lower.
- Set the flash to one of the two auto modes (selector switch is on a side).
- Match the ISO setting on the flash with the ISO setting on the camera.
- Set the aperture on the camera as the value indicated by the flash.
- Shoot.
- Check histogram. Adjust ISO setting and/or aperture setting on the camera to correct over/under exposure, if any.

It's only marginally stronger than the built in flash but it does move it up considerably and allows for less red eye and helps shoot over larger lenses and hoods.

And it does not have p-TTL with the preflash strobe that triggers (dumb) optical slaves.

The AF-16 was the budget kit flash around 1979. It did not have camera communication like the more powerful AF200S , and the AF160.
However that communication was just a flash ready and auto shutter sync, of marginal use.
AF16 claim to fame was that it came with a cable that allowed off camera use. Why that feature was deleted off the AF200s and AF160 is a puzzle because it allowed a cure for red-eye, also angled flash.
First photo is my 1980 AF16 with its cable on the MX, with the flash handle. The flash is still going perfectly after a lot of use over 30 years.
Second photo, I tried it tonight on the K-01
Third photo is the AF16 in "red" auto controlling the exposure for the K-01 at iso 100 and 1/180th, with the SMC Pentax-M 1:2.8 28mm at f/5.6, not f/4 per the chart on the old AF16

I'm trying to locate the flash cord for AF-16.
The receptacle is too small even for 2mm Vivitar jack - was this a unique cord or is there a generic substitute?
Thanks, David
