I went with an insert. I have an Ona insert that works in a lot of bags, but it is too wide for my latest messenger bag purchase. The bag I picked this time is maked out of quilted fabric and so the sides are adequately padded. I am adding a piece of foam to the bottom (got foam at the fabric store. I am also sewing a piece for the inside that will enable me to use the dividers I have from every other camera bag I have purchased.

The Ona insert is amazing. They make messengers too, but they are rather expensive. Their messengers do lack obvious logos though.

Buyers seem to like the thick padding and myriad tiny pockets and compartments of most brands in the camera store.
But you will find that overcomplicated design can be a major hindrance in the field when the action starts to heat up.

Domke bags are simple, well-made bags designed by and for photographers. They make several messenger-type bags.

Messenger bags - why are photo ones so easy to spot?
You don't even need the bag, can still spot the groove in the photographers shoulder as evidence of a recent photo messenger bags use, dead give away.

That is a nice bag. Sort of a Thinktank Retrospective clone. Tempting.

Yeah, before I bought mine I read a review comparing is to the Retrospective and the Pro Messenger looked to be the better bag.

That's one of the reasons I've gone over to the Pelican cases, it's called wheels.

Carry less gear, what you out of your mind?
