speedlight compatibility

I have a K-X and a friend just gave me a Nikon speedlight, sb-27 -; is this compatible, will it hurt anything?

No, it will be just fine. I use a Nikon SB-20, SB-24, SB-26, and two SB-25s all the time. Great flashes for both off camera and on camera use. When used on camera, the Nikons work great in both manual and auto mode.

As I understand it, only the center pin on the Nikon lines up on the Pentax hot shoe. To play it safe, I use a hot shoe adapter like this one: FlashZebra.com: Multipurpose Hotshoe Adapter (Item #0064).

I use an SB-26 and it works just fine. However, it will work only in manual mode as it is not a P-TTL flash. It also works reasonably well in the 'auto' mode. Camera in manual, select speed and aperture, then set the aperture on the flash to match and put the flash in 'A' mode. It's not perfect but it is close.
