Asahi Pentax magnifier.

I purchased an Asahi Pentax magnifier on Ebay, recently. Looks like a great little thing. However, one slight problem... It doesn't fit on the K-5... Is there any way I can make it fit without spending a lot of money?
Thanks!
P.S all it says is Asahi Pentax JAPAN

Asahi Pentax Eyepiece Magnifier w Original Case | eBay
(Hopefully that link works).

EDIT:
Or damaging the camera body

Don't damage it.

You should have bought either the M or FB magnifier

Pentax Focusing Aids

Just put the one you have back on eBay or here and take the hit.

You likely know - that Magnifier was intended for K and earlier bodies. All M and later bodies use the Magnifier-M or FB which fits the larger VF frame.

I've only read of one person who claims to have Dremeled your magnifier to make it fit later bodies.

Okay. I can return it still (The seller didn't know if it'd fit the k-5) and I'll try and find an M or FB. What is the difference between the M and FB anyway?

Good question. I have a Spiratone "PMC" (Pentax-Minolta-Canon) magnifier eyepiece for film SLRs. It fits perfectly on my K-1000 but not at all on either my Minolta X-700 film camera and my Pentax K-10D. I also have a no-name right-angle eyepiece I picked up at a garage sale for next to nothing. It fits loosely on the Minolta and very loosely on the K-1000 but not at all on the K-10D.

As far as I can make out with the limited means of measuring I have (rulers) the problems are:

There are spring clips on the Spiratone unit which makes the tabs to thick to fit on the Minolta or K-10D. There is also not enough space between the two tabs to fit on either the Minolta or K-10D

With the angle finder either the tabs are too thick or there is not enough space between the two tabs to fit.

From what measurements I can make if I shave off 0.5-1mm from each tab the space would then be wide enough for either eyepiece to fit on the K-10D or Minolta. However this does not address the thickness issue. I could snap off the springs on the Spiratone and then file the tabs thinner if need be on either unit. Grinding or filing down these tabs is made difficult from the size and layout of the piece needing modification.

To do that with this one, I'd have to take off 2 almost 3 mm, and it wouldn't be easy, as there is a piece of spring steel that would act as a clip to hold it on tightly. I think I'll send it back, or re-sell it. I did manage to find a Pentax M magnifier (Pentax SLR DSLR Viewfinder Magnifier ?M? | eBay) for sale. I put a bid in on that one. so hopefully I will get it.

Is there any difference in M vs FB magnifiers? Why are FB magnifiers significantly more expensive?

I'm not sure it is really clear. According to Dimitrov, the F and FB were targeted to the SF series and MZ series bodies so maybe they were only made for a short time.

I picked up an Olympus Varimagni recently, for $34. It gives two view magnifications, 1.2x and 2.5x, and is a perfect fit for the Pentax DSLR cameras. Works great, but it does not correct the view. Get used to seeing things upside down and backwards.

I bid on a Pentax-M magnifier, so we'll see if I win it, and see if it works out!
