Got the tripod: 055CXPRO4 + Markins Q10 (quick release) + Markins plate + carrying case for a little over $800. I thought it was an ok deal.

I hope this will last me for years!
If you take care of it (don't baby the stuff, but clean off the sand or grit that builds up), they will definitely last you for years. Markins stuff (I have a Q3) is pretty much bulletproof, and they set the standard for smoothness. No idea about the Manfrotto tripod (I have a Gitzo and a Feisol), but they're pretty popular for a reason! Enjoy!

Go with the Acratech head if weight is a concern. Kirk and Induro (née Benro) are pretty heavy for what they offer...
I think the Acratech would be a pretty good choice for a spendy-beginner head. I find them appealing for reasons that may apply similarly to our OP here: since I don't do *much* tripod work, and probably wouldn't be buying a lot of specialty stuff, some of their models have a nice way of being adaptable to special purposes fairly well without compromising the basic functions. Which are really the most important in my book, since 'simple and nice' works for the vast majority of my tripod work. (Like, one or two of those models can be set up into a reasonable approximation of a gimbal. Which probably isn't something I'd ever buy the real version of, but could come in handy on occasion if I ever happened to catch some work covering sports or something. )

I suspect one would serve our poster nicely till he knows enough to know if he needs anything more specialized.
