Manfrotto 190 Tripod alternatives?

Hi all, I'm looking into a good field tripod around the $200-300 price range. The Manfrotto 190 new series seems pretty hot at the moment, but I'd like to consider other alternatives. Suggestions?

In my experiences manfrotto are most relabel tripods.

I rather like my giottos mtl9271b which works well for me, but doesn't have that fancy center column. I prefer a solid tripod that extends over 60 inches (without the center column extended), so I don't mind the extra weight.

They have a new version that's a little more compact ytl9213. I think you might even find a carbon fiber version that is close to your price range (on sale).

Vanguard Alta Pro series. I love my 263AT. Don't let the low price fool you.

Why not the Manfrotto? My 055 legs are still working perfectly after more than 20 years. I did have to replace the quick release plate on the 0168 head I got with it because the cork surface was so worn it was even with the metal surround, but that is all the problems I have ever had.

The new 190 looks like a nice unit, they have added some cool features to it.

Other than price I don't see a reason not to get it.

Good thing about Manfrottos is that they are in every camera shop so you can conveniently try them out to see if you like the quality and weight.

My Manfrotto 055XPROB is very solid and the ability to switch the column angle comes in handy for macros.

I have moved away from the Manfrotto heads though, now using Arca-Swiss compatible stuff

Agreed. I just bought one as an upgrade to my (old) 190. Great tripod. And gives equivalent capabilities to the 055XPROB. Check it out.

Agree with that! Another feature of the center column is how quickly/easily it is removed. I have a second center column - one with my ball head mounted and one with my gimbal head mounted. Takes 5 seconds to change from one head to the other when needed.
