LensCoat Lens cover

I was just surfing B&H and came across this lens cover that is "waterproof" but there are cracks in the sleeve to allow the zoom ring to turn. Has anyone used one of these and how effective are they for protecting a non WR lens against rain. I want to get one for my Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. Thanks.

There are several types of sleeves for zoom lenses. There are very good in rain conditions with a zoom to prevent the raindrop to enter inside the lens when you 'pump in' the zoom. I use personally a home made one. Lenscoat, op/tech are among a few companies making sleeves.

Yes they are useful if you intend to shoot in the rain, even with a WR lens.

The neoprene LensCoat cover protects a lens from bumps, jars and nicks. It also acts as a thermal barrier making your lens more comfortable to handle in hot and cold temps. Depending on the color/pattern it also helps breakup the shape of the lens. The material is waterproof and keeps a good portion of the elements off the lens however as you have mentioned it is not a solid sheet but rather a series of rings allow ing easy access to all the lens functions the areas not covered can still get wet. If you are looking for a cover to use in only inclement conditions than a LensCoat RainCoat should suit your needs RainCoat - LensCoat
