AF-540 Flash turns on but no high pitch sound

Hi! I usually like to do some searching first before asking question but I haven't been able to find any useful info yet so want to reach out and see if any other forum members have had similar experiences.

I was traveling in HK recently and brought along the AF-540 to shoot some family gathering. When I set it up the screen turns on and functions as it should and can go to different modes.
But it just won't fire! At first I thought it was not making a good connection with the hotshoe but that realized that the test light doesn't come on or have the high pitch winding sound when the flash is charging.

Anyone know what I can do next and get it back up and running?

Thanks!
Sam

Hi Steve,
Yea I thought of that too and put in fresh energizer batteries in today. Still nothing and no sound from the flash.

It's a shot in the dark (yes, pun intended ), but doesn't hurt to try.

Set the charging mode to PP2 according to the procedure on right.

Hi Soldbear!

I followed the steps and the flash is charging now.
I have no idea how this setting got changed (in the check-in luggage) but so glad you were able to suggest this solution. Flash is working great now.

Thanks again!

Normally the setting of charging mode does not matter if you don't use an external high-voltage power supply (e.g. Quantum Turbo).

There is a mechanical switch at the high-voltage input port. In your case, the switch is stuck, making the flash to think there is a plug in the high-voltage port. Setting the charging mode to PP2 telling the flash there are two power sources: internal and external (external source is 0)

I had a chance to open up the 540 to fix a broken wire, and noticed that the switch was very flimsy.
