I use an old, big soft sided bag that I used to use with my medium format stuff. Heavy duty strap and I use a number of soft, squeezable oblong foam sponges that I pack alongside and under...don't forget under my Bigma and camera body. Boy is it solid...and light, but effective protection. It's like a custom made foam case and the equipment doesn't move...at all.

I get a package of about 8-10 foam sponges at my local Canadian Tire...for $ 2.49 a pack. Probably get something similar from WalMart.

Works well...better than any case I've used...ever.
Thanks. I've found a couple of cases but they're either just too short (like 1cm or 2cm) or far too long (like 10+cm). Custom, or modifying something I have, is looking more like what I'll do - at least initially.

I have the 50-500 instead of the 150-500 but they are similar sizes. For a day of photography, I carry it in a large photo backpack that can hold the lens plus mounted body. The 50-500 is not a casual use lens. I only bring it when I know I'll need that much reach.

The original padded case it shipped in is good for home storage inside a large airtight box with dry pack for fungus protection.

Update on the lens case pursuit for the 150-500 - I own the Lowepro Lens Case 11x26cm and like it for my Tamron 70-200/2.8 but it will definitely not fit in either key dimension the 150-500 with the removable tripod socket (TS-31) attached. So, I had the 11x26cm attached to my Toploader 75AW and I realized that it is deeper than the 11x26cm because its intended for the camera + the lens. Tried it out with just the 150-500 and it fits - just - without the camera attached. Not an ideal situation but acceptable for now until I find a better solution.

My Lowepro Fastpack 350AW just takes the 150-500 in the middle with a k-3/K-5 squeezed in on the end of it, the 100-300 F4 + 1.4T/C to one side, and on the other side there is another body, a couple of pistol grips, cleaning kit and so on - but it's b****y heavy and doing more than a mile or so is more than a real effort at my age! Often I leave the 150-500 at home and just take the 70-200 instead!

Thanks, good to know. That's a bit more than I want to carry on my outings. When I load my backpack full it weighs a tonne. I have a line on an Olympus lens case made for their 300/4 that looks promising.
