I paid quite a lot for Kirk MPA-2, but don't regret it. I can't really imagine to use any weaker head in combo with a heavy lens (like Sigma 150-500 or even heavier.... like the announced new Pentax FF lenses).

I'm glad you got one you like. I'm satisfied with what I bought also, using it with my 55-300, and my 400, on my monopod. So far I have absolutely no complaints on this one.

My Redged RP-3 ballhead behaves differently when camera plate stud is in different side-slots

Does your ballhead base (the thin one) rotate when the lever is loosened?
I might be unlucky with the faulty item

I'm not following which base (the thin one) you are referring to.

When the lever is loosened, all that is loose is the ball itself.

I use a mo frets 486 with quick release plate, same as on my light weight tripod

The only down side is that the monfretto quick release is not compatible with my Accra Swiss plate for my gimbal head so it is not easy to switch tripods.
