Suggestions for Pentax 20-40 Limited Filters

I just purchased a 20-40 and am really enjoying it. What a step up from the kit lens in the same size package

I know I will want a CPL at the very least, but what I'm interested to know is if I should be going for a super slim? I've never had a lens with a screw in hood, so I was wondering how that will change things?

Thanks!

I want one too!
I would say, go with a slim. The more versatile the filter the better.

I use the cokin p series filters, but not often enough to leave them on all the time. I need to get the 55mm adapter ring for my 20-40. Plan to leave the tiny hood off until I am done.

The round hood on the 20-40 if fine for use with a CPL because it will screw onto the filter and you simply rotate the hood. The square bayonet mount hoods of the 21Ltd and the new 18-50 RE are not similarly user friendly for CPL use. Those hoods end up in your pocket. Many super slim filters have no front threads. If you get 55mm slim CPL with no front threads, you won't be using the hood and the CPL at the same time. I like pinch caps better than push-ons like the 20-40 cap. The 20-40 is good enough that the hood effect is marginal. I can leave that hood at home, and have a lens cap easier to deal with that goes on both the CPL and the lens. I work faster, and don't worry about dropping that nice metal 20-40 hood and cap. The trade-off is worth it to me.

I also did not like the supplied hood falling off in the bag or in use. My solution was to get a 55mm to 67mm step up ring which in itself almost supplies as much flare protection as the supplied hood. A pinch cap clips to the ring nicely as does a third party hood and filters. When I get a 60-250 I will be able to share filters.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've had the cap come off in the bag as well, I think I'll get a pinch cap.

A step up ring could be what I need as I'd like a better CPL for my 50-135 as well.
