What do you all think about the "vented" hoods? What is the purpose of the vents? Are the vented hoods better in any way?
They are lighter - which is a bonus.

The question is, on my lenses, do I go by the " 49mm" inscription when shopping for hoods or something else?
For screw type hoods, yes.

Beware, I bought an aftermarket hood for my 18-135, it fit great but it is visible in the corners at 18mm.

Is it a bayonett hood?

Screw mount. I couldn't find an aftermarket bayonet mount for Pentax and I didn't want to pay 65 bucks for a piece of plastic.

Hoods for zoom lenses need to be sized for the wide end. Some use rubber hoods that have several depths but I don't have any.

If you're focused on lens hoods...you're missing the point of photography. Pick a hood that works, don't fret over whether it's the 'best' or not...and get on with your life!
Edited to add: Unless you're a collector (and there's nothing wrong with that), a hood is just a device to serve a purpose. Round hoods are pretty much as good as tulip hoods except in that 99.9% of times where a light source is in one of the corners of the frame. My advice is...re-compose! LOL
