It's the question which risk I want to take. A decision like getting an insurance contract for something or not.

Until now I didn't realize any problem with flare. In the first place I used my very old skylight filters. They were really very much prone to flare, so I changed them against the good filters. I bought them and for now stay with them. Maybe I'll change this with future lens purchases.

Yep, that's the way I think, too. But I have concluded that buying good quality filters for all my lenses might well cost as much as replacing a lens. I'd rather take the risk of going without - and at the same time avoid the risk of inducing flares and aberrations with said filters. Has worked well so far

Count me in also in using a hood rather than filters. All my lenses have the hoods on, with a soft neoprene "cap", such as this one fitting the hood.

Hoodie Lens Caps - LensCoat

Works very well for me.
