CaptureLENS by Peak Design

So Peak Design announced a new product today. CaptureLENS which works with their Capture system for quick lens changing. Unfortunately it's only Canon, Nikon and Sony E mounts supported. But may change with more customer feedback.

Kinda neat idea, but I see so may problems and potential for failure with that. :-(

I like and own a bit of their stuff. They make great products, but still......
Main problem I see right off the bat is that it is a great place to collect dirt, rain, etc... and dump it right into your lens.

No doubt. I'd imagine it being best with smaller sized lenses like m4/3 or primes.

Man I'd love this. I noticed a few pentaxians in the comments on the PD site already asking for it in K mount.

The poor 'hygiene' on display in the demo video creeped me out.

That open camera body, those lenses without rear caps, all those dirt/dust/pollen/bug/hair/rain/sand/cigarette ash/fingerprint entry opportunities with the new Peak Design product. Ewwww.

Gimmick
Personally I find it utterly senseless for the reasons mentioned by others and a few I can think of myself.

It looks like you could take a standard mount off a donor beater body and swap these to K mount fairly easily.

Cute. Have they thought of a 3-Way or 4-Way?

I think it's a clever design. However, when I use a messenger bag like the one the fellow uses, I simply do the same thing inside the bag.

Can you explain what you mean in more detail?

I have backed the PD messenger bag on the current kickstarter campaign and I found the CaptureLens to be interesting as well. I do agree with some of the concerns already posted here though. But, I do think this could find use at times. Sadly it doesn't look like they will be supporting a K-mount any time soon.

In the same way that the mount on a lens can be removed and added to a Nikon to make it mount on a Pentax K-Mount you can take the mount ring off an old beaten up K-mount camera and drill the appropriate holes to line up with where their existing Nikon version mounts and mount a K-Mount flange on the device. It appears to screw on - should be really simple to convert. Or am I missing something complicated?

Alternative is to pick up a Pentax K to Canon EF/Nikon F/Sony E mount adapter like this one.

Yeah, an adapter would work but you would need two of them for the "quick change" functionality to work. So, you then have $60 in adaptors plus $40 for the CaptureLens (assuming you already have a CaptureClip). That's a bit of money to spend as you are spending 150% of the cost of the item just to adapt it to work for K-mounts.

Canon adapters appear to be cheaper

It looks to me like you can do it for ~$15 dollars in adapters if you go with the canon model, where the adapters won't contain lenses. That's a lot easier pill to swallow.

Here's the adapter I found: Amazon.com: 1 X Pentax PK Lens to Canon EOS EF Mount Adapter: Camera & Photo

I'm thinking about trying this, but I'm wondering if it might be awkward to get the lens off instead of the adapter quickly. I guess it depends on the adapter.
