Do you cover your ball head against dust when not in use?

I recently decided to keep a Graf Studioball that I had in the marketplace. It is by far the largest ball head I have ever used. I think the ball is 68mm (2.7" inches) in diameter. The top of the ball is pretty exposed and I wondered if I could get a bag style cover to put over it when it sits in the corner (which is variable duration depending on what I am shooting).

Just wondering what everyone does in this respect? I don't have a tripod bag - mine has a sling that attaches directly to the pod not a bag.

I read that as "Do you cover your bald head against dust when not in use", and had to think about it...

Seems like a neoprene pouch could make a good dust cover. For the ball head, not the bald head.

For ballheads that need cleaning/grease once in a while and don't like grit, certainly couldn't hurt. For others (like my Acratech that is designed to be maintenance free), wouldn't matter...

Graf is a maintenance free one also - no grease - etc. But still if it sits why let dust accumulate... ?
Maybe the better question is would I let the tripod sit long enough to get dusty? Probably not...

Bring down the feather duster from the bedroom for use on your ball bits...

No... just me then.

Just blow the dust off before you use it.

Mine (Giottos) came with a fabric bag that pretty much stays on it when not in use.

This could be just as wrong as Kerrowdown's post

I've been follically challenged since my late 20s, (thanks, Mom!) so I have to cover my bald head against sun, whether I'm using it or not (opinions vary). Not sure about dust, tho'.

I don't have a bald head, but it's a pretty good idea to keep it covered anyhow!

Regards!

So we'll call you Caesar

Most standalone ball heads I've seen come with a pouch that could be used, reversed, to protect the head when mounted. A golf club "sock" could also work. As for me, I use the carrying pouch of my tripod when not in use so I don't worry.
