Question on use of polarising and ND square filters

I've just been watching a tutorial video and the chap was photographing a stream in woodland with sun light shining through the trees. He used a combination of gradient ND and polarising square filters. Afterwards, I got to thinking... assuming the polariser is a CPL-type, he'd have to rotate it to get the desired effect... but then, that would knock his gradient ND out of alignment, surely? So, how do you use these two filters together?

Depends on the holder system. With some it appears you have to rotate the CPL to your liking, then insert the rectangular filter(s). With others the CPL sits in fron of the rectangular filters and can be freely rotated without affecting the others.

Right. In fact, after some searching, I came across this video by Lee Filters:

Circular and Linear Polarisers from LEE Filters

So, the CPL is actually a standard round filter that attaches onto the square filter holder, then the ND can be inserted as required... Makes sense now
