Saw this on ebay:
Pentax Asahi Original Microscope Adapter Fits M42 Cameras | eBay
What's confused me is that the pictures show a female thread not a male one. I assume the female threaded part is some type of adapter that this was used with to mount to another camera? it looks like it is just the female M42 ring that was coupled to the adapter and then perhaps another male 42mm threaded ring was used to mate this with something - or is there a part missing?
Oh and I have no interest in buying it - just curious.

I think that confirms my suspicions and shows that the extra ring on the cheaper unit for sale is superfluous.
