Prices - Go Figure!

The other week I made a comment on another thread about the Houston Camera Exchange which is closing out its Pentax stock. I was offered the Pentax 150-450mm for an "absolute lowest possible price" of $2100. The lens is available at B&H for $1760!

While I was there, I also saw a nice tripod which I thought would be right for my son-in-law and his super-zoom. It was a ProMaster for $79.95. Since I would have to send it to St. Louis, I thought I would buy it on Amazon and have it direct shipped for free. Well, Amazon was $149.95! So I checked Adorama and B&H - same result, $149.95.

So today I went back to the Houston Camera Exchange and bought the tripod for $79.95 - almost half the price as online! This from the same place whose "absolute lowest price" on a lens was $400 more than several other sources' standard price. Go figure.

However, after considering the gas to drive there, the postage to send it, and the restaurant lunch with my wife on our way home from the store, maybe it would have been cheaper to buy it from Amazon.

No. I really didn't want it (can't afford it). He had a Pentax user in front of him, and tried to show me just about everything he had that had a Pentax brand on it.

My real point was how prices can be all over the place, and there really is no one best place to shop.

You are correct there AggieDad. It pays to do some homework before buying anything these days.
