I ended up ordering a Hoya DMC Pro1 from Adorama. At $47 it seemed like a good compromise between price and quality. Neither B&H or Adorama had the Hoya HD but later I found it on Amazon for about $65 which was a little more than I wanted to spend.

So far I'm happy with the Pro1. It seems to be well built, does what it's supposed to, no vignetting at 16mm, lens cap snaps on securely. On the con side it's very dark.

Here are some sample images taken at 16mm:

ISO 200, F8, 1/160 (w/CPL)
IMGP2513 , with CPL

ISO 200, F8, 1/800
IMGP2514 , without CPL

ISO 200, F8, 1/100 (w/CPL)
IMGP2518 , with CPL

ISO 200, F8, 1/500
IMGP2519 , without CPL

Thanks again, everyone, for the tips and suggestions!

Any recommendations regarding the B+W MRC vs. Hoya HD2 vs. Hoya NXT for the 16-85? I am especially concerned about vignetting. Thanks

I have not used any of these but looking at the specs, the NXT is not coated so I would pass on it.
The specs for the HD2 mention a thin frame like my Hoya Pro-1 and I don't see any vignetting with it so the HD2 would probably be a safe bet. It's less money too.

Considering that the lens has a filter mount that's surprisingly large, I'm not sure you need to be concerned if the threads had been, say, 67mm.

I'm reviving this thread since I just acquired a 16-85 and am shopping around for CPLs. The examples from JimS 256 at the top of page 2 here using the Hoya DMC Pro1 look very good, even when I downloaded the full-size images. I'm wondering if anyone else has updated info on good/bad experiences with CPLs on the 16-85. (I'm shopping in the $50 or so range.) Thanks!

I don't think too much has changed. The mid grades from Hoya, B+W or Marumi should all be fine for your budget. I mentioned the Breakthrough Photography filter earlier and can now report that it is hands down the best filter I have. But the price is inline with that as well. I've since bought one for the DFA 24-70 as well and that was cringingly expensive.

The main differences are going to be quality of workmanship, and the coatings once you get to the higher grades.

I purchased a MeFOTO Wild Blue Yonder CPL for my DA 16-85. I just wrote a somewhat lengthy review HERE. Bottom line: It's an excellent value in the 72mm size at ~$50-60, and it's an incredible value if it is still available for $26.
