TR POWER PACK 3 FOR AF-540FGZ - DIY or alternate

Hi
Has anyone made a DIY version of some sort of external hi-capcity battery for their flash?

Some ideas...

Why not just buy extra sets of good rechargeables like Eneloops or Powerex? Less than $25 and foolproof.

Event shoots. Don't want to be changing batteries; also external packs are faster cycle time.

I have two of the JJC FB-4(II)I use with my AF540fgz's. So far I have found they have worked really well using re-chargable AA's. The recycle time is around 1 sec or possibly less, I haven't timed them I just know it's a heck of a lot less than the 540's alone. Even though they can be mounted on the bottom via the tripod screw I find that isn't very convenient so if I am using one on camera I either attach it to my belt or my vest, off camera to a light stand. I will say they are much cheaper than the Pentax TR lll but difficult to find now. You might try Cowboy Studio (around $40) or the JJC web site if your interested.

If you want an external battery back for the faster cycle time, it'll have to be a high voltage power supply, not a 4xAA 6 volt DIY solder and gaffa tape job that connects to the battery compartment contacts.

I also recommend the JJC power pack, from personal experience.

Regards,
--Anders.
