some basic questions regarding teleconverters

I know this is a really basic question, but I'm not sure of the answer... if I use a teleconverter with a new lens w/out aperture settings, does it force the lens to shoot wide open all the time and I forgo any control over aperture?

The answer depends on the lens and the TC. If you have a TC with the aperture linkage (not an M42 version) then you can manually stop the TC down. If you get one with the electrical contacts (like the Tamron 1.4, Pentax 1.7 or 1.4 to name a few). everything works as normal with the camera body. The tamron and a couple of other models (Kenko) also have the drive screw so AF will opperate if the lens is f4 or faster.

The teleconverter I have is an old (at least I think it is) soligor 2x. I tried the teleconverter w/ an all auto lens and could not get the aperture to change, so I'm thinking it's taking pics only wide open. and the lens would not focus either, so it would appear the soligor is very basic. Thanks for the explanation...

You can still use the Soligor in Manual Exposure mode even though it does not have the lens information contacts. Search for a thread on using K and M series lenses for the details on how to work with them.

Yeah, I think you're right about using my manual lenses... I think that'll be my only option. Unfortunately, my "M" 80-200 has a case of the fungus, so I'm not sure I want to use it, though last time I took pics w/ it, the images didn't appear marred by the fungi. I'm using the teleconverter for a car race this weekend... looks like the tammy 70-300 will have to do. Hopefully I can get somewhat close to the action.
