Pentax Digital Spotmeter eyecup rubber replacement

Hi All,

Due to GAC/LBA + stupid curiosity + eBay bidding impulse, a Pentax digital spotmeter arrived at my porch early this week. Playing with it, I noticed that it is missing the rubber piece that seals around the eyepiece frame, the one that is between the eyepiece frame and the lock ring. I think it does not add critical functionality, but I am curious if such rubber part replacement exists. The OCD part of me has been furiously googling around to find such. Is it possible that a generic rubber for binoculars or scope rifles would fit? If you know what dimensions I should look for, kindly share.

Thanks,

Andy

Dunno, maybe one of eyecups from one of the Nikon camera eyepieces might fit. They probably slip over a similar shaped part.

All the rubber eyecups I've ever seen for binoculars simply push onto the existing plastic (or metal) eyepiece. This requires a fair amount of cylindrical surface area for them to grip.

Looking at your photo I don't think the very narrow cylindrical area would be enough to hold a binocular eyecup in place.

As others have suggested maybe a camera eyecup could work IF you can find one of the right diameter and especially if it has a groove large enough to accept the flange on your light meter.

Without a dab of contact glue or instant glue anyway

Thanks all. I am wondering how the original/new spotmeter looks like. Does it come with a rubber seal around the eyepiece? I googled around for close up pics of the eyepiece, and could not conclude. Below is a closest I can find:

I just Googled it too and most shots seem to show the unit like yours. However, I did find these two shots that appear to show what looks like a flat rubber eyepiece over the plastic part in your photo.

Maybe the part was easy to knock off hence the number of shots without it in place. If that was the case you'd think there was a source for replacements somewhere.

Thanks Tako Kichi. It should be available somewhere. I have a hunch that rubber piece should be a common thing, and can be replaced with a generic parts made for another optical instrument.

There is no rubber part on my Spotmeter. Canīt see why there should be one either.

It looks like the spotmeters eye piece frame is about the same size as the 6x7. You could try the 6x7 rubber eye-cup.

My own copy of the digital spotmeter does have a rubber piece there. There is a mention of it in this manual on page 5: Pentax Digital Spotmeter instruction manual, user manual, PDF manual, free manuals

Based on Phil's input, I ordered a 6x7 rubber eye-cup from eBay. After spending $7 and 2 weeks waiting (came from Japan) here is what I found:

6x7 rubber eye cup & Spotmeter

Take out the metal ring inside the eye cup

Put the rubber eye cup on the spotmeter, and we have....

Thanks Phil!!
