Yeah...even though my Gitzo is my "go to" tripod, I also have a smaller Manfrotto that gets a lot of use, an off-brand carbon fiber that gets used when weight is a problem, and a Gitzo 0-series for when I want to go really small.

I'm following TaoMaas' "horses for courses" philosophy as well--my remuda currently consists of 1.) a Uni-loc 1700 for day hikes, especially during wildflower season; and 2.) a CF Induro CX-214 for longer jaunts up the hill. Still pending approval from the domestic unit are 3.) a travel tripod for international trips; and 4.) a "big hammer," (Gitzo 3-series equivalent) for classic landscape scenarios, especially with Medium Format kit. I could even find a use for this 'un:

if only to pair with my Manfrotto 410 in case I needed to Mjolnir a bear. And you say you have a problem...


BTW, I suspect your K-1/70-200 combination would make that Explorer squeal--a great tripod for other applications, though.

Not sure. I will say the MeFoto holds up to its weight limit, except for the centre column, which almost holds the rated 17.6lbs fully extended.

I had the IIRC caveat there. I must retract that statement! The Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod will hold my 165 pound weight fine on a carpeted floor. Even with the column extended.
My previous experience was on a slick concrete where the legs slid and spread.
