Hello,

I am know looking for a tripod, more for September or October but I like to find out in advance what I'm going to buy.

The one I like the best is the Manfrotto/Bogen 785B MODO MAXI TRIPOD (or even the mini).
The main reason I like it is that it can go very low and can get at a decent height.
I like its price too, especially with a ball head.
What I do no like is its limitation regarding the maximum loading capacity (2.2 lbs).

Does any of you know of a similar tripod with a load capacity of around 4 lbs?

Tripods have been discussed a lot lately on the site (I was in the market for one until I bought a Manfrotto 725B). This would be inadequate because I don't think it can get as low as you would like. The minimum height is 18.5''.

From what I've read, some people may recommend the Slik Sprint Pro which is very light, can get very low (6.4''), and supports 4.5 lbs.

I'm sure someone else will chime in, but I hope this gets you started.

Though, there is no quick-release plate which would be very nice. It is also missing the bubble level but that is less important.

Incidentally, I also purchased a Slik Sprint Pro whilst on vacation in Ireland last year, but I definitely wouldn't contemplate fixing my K10D with D BG-2 grip and heavy Tamron 18-250mm lens on it, as IMHO when fully extended it's simply not sufficiently stable enough for such a task !

Hi Richard, I'm really glad that you posted the link to your review of that Manfrotto tripod because I missed it when you first posted.
It is one of the most practical reviews of a product I have seen.

Does anyone else think it's worth asking Adam if an Accessories review database is at all possible?

Buying a tripod can be a difficult exercise because there are so many choices. I'm surprised TBA has not yet been recognised along with BBA for bags.

YJD, I hope you tell us about whatever tripod you settle on.

I've got the Gitzo GT2531EX and it can get down to below ground level, seriously. The center column is also capable of swiveling, so the legs can go flat (across a well say) and the head can extend another 18 inches below the surface. Very nice, light and sturdy.

Giottos seems really nice, but i really don't have the money for it.
Any cheaper solutions? Like under or around $100?

No I haven't thought about that, but it does limit about the height.
If I go that way, only their SLR-Zoom version will be interesting.
Or I could buy a small tripod, what do you thing?

Let me ask the question differently:
Does a version of the Manfrotto/Bogen 785B MODO MAXI TRIPOD with a loading capacity of over 4lbs exist (at around $100)?

If it does not, I need to look at something different, like:
- Vanguard MARS 1
- Vanguard Tourist 5
- Hakuba / Velbon Mini F
- Joby GorillaPod SLR-Zoom
- Slik Sprint Mini
- Slik Sprint Pro

Which one would you choose? You can had other ones if you think there are better ones.

I think the SLIK SPRINT PRO would be the best bet. The description says the head is removable and that the legs will hold 8.8 pounds. Replace the head with a unit that can handle more load and you have what you want. The Silk also has a decent height for its weight. With a right angle finder you might find the tripod can be comfortably used with the column collapsed. The feet are spiked, comes with a case, and has a ball head, all for US $65. Seems like a good deal to me.

I couldn't find the SLIK SPRINT PRO Black version, but I don't think the leg coverings are that big of a deal.
