Shooting in RAW demands fast cards. Pro oriented type cards that is. Stick to reputable brands purchased from real photo stores.l Stay away from supermarket memory cards.

Speed will help with burst shooting, and with downloading times. I don't worry about it too much, though. I view cards as a commodity and buy based on price. I'll read online reviews to see if there are any systemic problems, and if not, then I'll buy.

IMHO, 1GB is too small for raw, and 2GB is pushing it. I'd look at 4GB as the sweet spot. I personally use 8GB, but some people argue against putting all your eggs in one basket.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! is a good source for memory cards, and they have good user reviews which help identify any systemic problems.

Sandisk Extreme III (or IV, dont remember) 8GB

It is FAST and you cant even tell you are shooting in RAW. Incredible little bastard. Liked so much that after 3 days and bought another card! (it had a nice rebate offer as well).

I've had the same card, a 2GB Sandisk in my K100D for the last year, and format it after every upload. I believe it's this one: Sandisk | 2GB Ultra II Secure Digital (SD) Card | SDSDH-002GR

If one doesn't shoot RAW, and doesn't care about faster writing or downloading times, is there any real advantage to using a more expensive card, if capacity is not a consideration?

Also, what's the life expectancy of an average card?

If you have a K100D like me, card speed is not the real issue (the small buffer is).

I have a few Sandisk II's rated at 60X, and some Lexar and Kingston Class 6 SDHC. They all seem fine.

Advantage of buying at least one Sandisc Extreme III is you get a card reader with it that slots into your USB port, and a little pouch.
