Larger high magnification binoculars are popular with astronomy hobbyists.
They're more comfortable to use than a telescope and are not particularly hard to hold steady - when lying down.

Yes, always ask a birder. Brightness is critical to avoid fatigue for long term viewing.
Lower magnifications are much easier to hold steady, and better for general use.
A model with wider field of view is also preferable.

My mostly used tool out in the field would have to be a the R-315N Pentax Total station. I have logged several hundred of hours behind that instrument.

Yes the humble 8 x 25 bins might be limited in low light, but there are light weight, compact and easy to use, and I'm much more likely to be carrying them. It's a bit like the choice between 55-300 and Bigma.
