I use a non Pentax battery and i switch it between the camera and the grip. So far no issues..it is made by CTA.. I do however have an issue with the battery meter never showing that the batteries are going dead. Its always an unpleasant surpise.

Minolta NP-400 is supposed to be the same battery for less money.

The Konica Minolta battery is an NP-400.
When I got my K10D I used the four batteries I'd been using with my Konica Minolta A2 for the first couple of weeks. They are fine. One is the original KM branded battery and the other three are aftermarket clones.
I've since charged the actual Pentax battery and continue to use all five batteries interchangeably. I have the battery grip and use two batteries at a time, with any mix of brands.
All batteries are charged in my Konica Minolta charger most of the time.

Yes. I've used generic batts from a Chinese eBay vendor :ugh: and have been reasonably pleased with them. Given their very cheap price, they really don't perform too badly - but as I've recently found out are not so endurant to take those long exposures, unless they're relatively new.

My original/Minolta branded batts have been much more reliable but are of course over 4 times the price of non-OEM batts.

Pentax DL-I50 = $38-ish
Rayovac (from Batteries Plus) = $40
Minolta NP-400 = $10

The choice is clear...I have 2 Pentax-branded (paid like $25 each) and one NP-400

I have a Pentax branded battery and a Minolta NP400 for each of my K10's. I can't tell the difference between them to be honest.

Here in Canada the Pentax battery is $100. The NP400's were bought off of a reputable dealer on Ebay for about $11 each.

B&H has the Minolta batteries for $9.95 each.
Konica Minolta | NP-400 Lithium-Ion Battery | 8699X001 | B&H

I bought my extra off-brand battery from Adorama. I'm not sure if it's just me or what, but it doesn't seem to last quite as long as the Pentax battery that came with the camera.

I also have some replacement battery, it says "For Np400 Replacement" on it, and it's rated at 2800 mAh (compared to 1620 mAh of original D-LI50. But it seems to me that it lasts same as original, altough it should almost twice longer. Maybe original charger can't charge it fully, don't know... Anyway, it's good as long as it's not weaker than original

I think next time I get something from B&H, I'll pick up one more NP-400 since I won't have to pay shipping just for that little guy Just like I did with my Eneloops...

I decided that I have much money invested in my kit; hence I've stuck with the real deals and bought several Pentax originals that I rotate on a regular basis through my cameras and grips.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I will go the cheap route as well. I may never need to use my backup in my grip, where this will live. Can batteries loose charge if they are not being used? Anyone have problems with the np400 not showing in the lcd on the camera, as mentioned in the 2nd or third reply?

The CTA (off brand) was mentioned to have issues. The NP-400 should have no issues, although I would appreciate it if Pentax would give us an update in firmware to show more than "full," and "close to dead." But I know they won't

All batteries lose charge when sitting, some less than others.

I have some CTA's, what issues are you aware of? Should I be worried?

I have 3 of the Impact batteries from B&H. The only thing I've noticed is that the batteries took a few charge/recharge cycles before they came up to "full power". That is, the batteries seemed to be a little weak or short-lived for the first couple of charge cycles but once you get past that, they work great. Last year, I photographed a wedding where the rehersal was at 9 AM, the ceremony was around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, and the reception lasted until 10 or 11 PM. I was shooting with 2 K10Ds with battery grips with the Impact batteries in the grip and the cameras did not switch to the in-body batteries until the reception.
