Tamron F-AF 1.4TC vs. Pentax TC

I have the Tamron, but have been wondering, would I see any/much difference in my photos with the Pentax?

I'd be using it with the Sigma F4 300, and my Tamron 500 mirror lenses.

Optically, I doubt it, but you get accurate (i.e. modified for the TC) aperture and focal length data sent to the body with the Pentax. (So SR works better.)

Thanks! Optically is what I am interested in; so maybe I've saved some money!

I had the Tamron one: was good but sold it to acquire the Pentax 1.4x TC ....
The Pentax one: I am disappointed with the (optical) results ... period.

Wow, that is surprising! What made you disappointed; sharpness or what?

Well, I'll try to make it as short as possible ...

The lens used: DA*300/4 ... yes I know, it isn't the best lens to use with a TC but that is all I have for tele.
Anyway, a while back I had been using the Tamron (as you described) and got fairly good results as far as "optical" performance was concerned.
I also used the Pentax 1.7x TC (which I still have) and also obtained good results ... a bit awkward to use but nonetheless quite once when you get used to it.

Then, as mentioned earlier, sold the Tamron to get this "excellent" Pentax HD 1.4x TC: with the same lens (DA*300/4) I am getting at least 8 out of 10 shots blurry.
So, I suppose this could be a lemon ? I have yet to send the entire gear (lens and TC) to have the folks at Ricoh (Canada) figure out the problem.

I'm guessing something's wrong with the TC. I've seen great results with that TC. Curious as to why the DA*300/F4 "isn't the best lens to use with a TC"? As I'm using a 300/F4 with the Tamron TC, and cropping results are good.

Check out this thread:

Teleconverter challenge Sigma vs Kenko vs Tamron X1.4 - PentaxForums.com

I don't have a comparison with the pentax tc, but the kenko/sigmas/tamron 014f (adaptall) for me are in the same ball park IQ wise.

Thanks, but I'm only interested in the comparison of the Tamron vs Pentax, since I have the Tamron PZ, 1.4x MC4.

I own the FA* 300 f/4.5 and the DA* 60-250 f/4 and have nothing like that happen ever with my HD DA 1.4x converter. I'm so sorry that you have had problems.

+1.

I don't use the rebranded Tamron 1.4x or old Sigma 2x I've got. It's the Pentax HD or I was better off cropping.

Send yours back to get one that's up to spec, Jpzk!

That's what I'm also guessing.
I use the Pentax 1.4x TC with the DFA 150-450 and to my eye it is very hard to see any loss of quality.

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks for the feedback folks.
(BTW, sorry to the OP for stealing your thread)

I am just wondering if I should just send the TC without the lens because this is the time of the year when I use the DA*300/4 the most. I'd be without it for a few weeks.
Anyway, I'll give them (Ricoh) a buzz and see what they say.

To the OP: seems like most members here having used this HD TC have had great results, so I would agree with them regarding the IQ rather than following my lead !

Cheers!

I don't know the Tamron, but I have to look at the exif data to tell if the Pentax TC was even used. On DA* lenses there simply is no way of telling, except for the focal length in the exif. Also the HD DA 1.4 TCs retains your water seals on WR lenses.

Mine is used with the DA*200, DA*60-250, and Tamron 300 2.8. The increase in subject detail over shooting without and cropping, can be amazing on some images, although there are also instances where you'd get pretty much the same image.

But you really need someone who has the Tamron and can post a couple of images they think represent the two TCs. The rest of us are just blowing smoke.
