K-3ii a bug or an estimate - Solved

Hi All,

I'm using 16GB cards in my K-3ii, and when formatted the screen informs me I have a count of 300 RAW only shots per card.

The thing is, recently I shot all day at a motor event and filled 3 x 16GB cards and part of a loaned 32GB card and came home with 2300 raw images. There were 500 shoots on each of the 16GB raw cards.

Do I have a bug of some sort that miscalculates the capacity?, or is that just a conservative estimate?

Could someone test a formatted 16GB card in their camera and give the estimate?

Thanks in advance

I use 16gb cards in my K3, and when formatted, it states 300 raw files. I average (when I fill one) between 375 and 400 per card. It’s a conservative number.

If you shot an over exposed white wall you could probably get 2000 images. How much info is in the picture matters. It makes sense a card would estimate based on "busy" photos.

DNG RAW are losslessly compressed on the K-3II (and on most cameras): that means that the amount and quality of the information has an impact on the final file size.
The camera can't know in advance which pictures you're going to shoot.

Edit: swanlefitte beat me to it!
