Why no aGPS

Yes, tried some googling and zero result. Why there is no aGPS as an additional feature in cameras? I mean, this should be fairly simple, just getting information from GSM stations for positioning, no real communication required, no sim card needed... so, why?

Power consumption?

Why no aGPS in O-GPS1 + aGPS only for initial lockup? Nah, I would rather think of different "certification" requirements...

More than likely because it really isn't needed and because receiving GSM base station information would require an additional antenna, DSP processor, and programming logic to incorporate it. At best it would provide a quicker fix after a long power off as it would be another source of info. If shooting inside you would still get position information but there again it isn't needed. Also the aGPS using GSM basestation information doesn't provide better accuracy than standard GPS.

aGPS requires a GSM chipset and appropriate antenna.

Actually, it seems that internet connection is needed, and that would be an issue "*An A-GPS-capable device can connect to these servers and download this information using mobile-network radio bearers such as*GSM,*CDMA,*WCDMA,*LTE*or even using other radio bearers such as*Wi-Fi. Usually the data rate of these bearers is high, hence downloading orbital information takes less time." - wikipedia

It would increase material costs, developing costs, camera body size, more memory to save ten thousands of GSM station data and someone to buy and collect the data worldwide.
Also the data has to be updated frequently. Doesn't make sense for a camera.

A possible better model would be to link to a smartphone and get the aGPS data over low energy bluetooth or nfc. This is different from models that have no gps and rely on the smartphone for it - this would be augmenting the gps in the camera rather than removing it.

If going that route you could get better accuracy if you were willing to use some of your cellular data and pull in some differential GPS info from NOAA's CORS network. Granted as most cellphones don't have a proper timing GPS module that exposes pseudorange data you wouldn't be able to do proper RTK corrections but you should be able to still do better than WAAS corrections. Some states even have a more extensive CORS network than the feds run but will limit access to it and as a regular tax payer it becomes a bitch fighting them to get access.

I believe you need either a huge database (which can change all the time) or network access for this to work.

Perhaps because it would be a useless add on?
