Originally posted by honey bo bo I have considered it. I might go that route, but I've also considered the YN560III's and the TX controller Brooke mentions in this next post:
Originally posted by Brooke Meyer My first Pentax 540, bought new, melted down internally after the warranty and couldn't be fixed. Used my second one (bought used) with a YN560 until the YN560III's showed up. They eliminated a separate receiver and gave me remote power control, just like my Buff Cyber Commander.
Sold the 540, gave the YN560 to a family member and now have a bag of 5 YN560III's. And the Buff Trigger piggybacks on an RF-603N II so I can use both together. All this works and is cheap. Dropped a YN 560 TX Remote / Trigger outside a horse barn after a shoot two counties away. It wasn't worth a round trip to look for it so for $38, ordered another.
One of my YN560III's did "pop" internally about a month after I got it, on a students camera in class. I assured her it wasn't her fault and got a replacement under warranty. The plastic battery doors
do wear but are
easily replaceable for $4.95
I may weaken one day and get a pair of 585's for on camera use at events. If they had built-in receivers and remote power and zoom control, I'd already have them. I was using the 540's in Manual anyway. As for HSS, a 4 stop ND filter works pretty well on cameras that can AF down to -3EV.
Yes, ND filters do work for when your shooting for/1.4 lenses wide open on a sunny day, but on other occasions my K-5 isn't that great focusing in low light. The K-5 ii and subsequent models are better at it. And it's not a workaround if you're trying to stop action in some cases.
One of the things that bothers me, is that the YN585EX doesn't have radio controlled wireless function that would make it the coolest option with the TX. Conversely, the III's don't have TTL.
It's really frustrating that you can't have it all in one package.
HSS and rear curtain sync are great features to have for when the time calls. The LED function is GREAT for focusing on low light and it's something the Yongnuo's don't have.
Nice portrait, BTW, Brooke.
Hmm, what I did notice was the difference in color between the Pentax's and the Yongnuo's. One would have to gel or work with only one kind of flash for consistent WB.
