I won a Pentax binoculars (early 90's I think). I bought a PZ10 and was entered into a contest with 3 prizes. I got 3rd prize which was the 8x24UCF Pentax binoculars. Honestly I'e never been impressed. I'm sure time and technology have made improvements. I got a pair of 10x42 Nikon Monarch Binoculars for Christmas yesterday (which I picked out). During selection process I wanted to hold them in my hands and put them to my eyes. No Pentax to be found in my area. Too bad, I would liked to have considered the brand. Been a loyal pentaxian for 40 years. The Monarch 10x42 I find very impressive especially for the price.

I can only speak for South Africa, but Pentax are not big on advertising cameras. Even less so on binoculars, which is a pity, because they can certainly compete with the best.
From surfing the Ricoh website, it seems like the ZD - ED range are the equivalent of DFA* lenses, with the multi-coating and waterproofing.

Definitely *not* shockproof!

I like my Pentax 8x40 PCF binoculars well enough.
However even with light use they have required service twice in a little over ten years.

Though never treated roughly twice an internal prism came loose.
The first time one image was blurry, the second they appeared "cross-eyed".

BTW when choosing binoculars pay careful attention to that second number or eyestrain may result!
