One of the best film era 70-210mm lenses, the Tamron SP Adaptall-2 model 19 AH CF Macro features a unique lens hod design. The original hood bayonets onto the outer moon barrel which means it moves in and out relative to the front lens element providing optimal coverage at both 70-mm and 210mm. Unfortunately, the original hood is missing from just about all of these classic lenses on the used market. Not a big deal for most lenses, but this design precludes mounting a hood on the internal 62mm filter threads because there isn't enough clearance. The lens barrel cannot zoom from 70mm with a hoot screwed into the threads. Original hoods are scarce and expensive, often selling for more then the $60-$100 the lens brings!
I first tried gaffer taping a plastic hood from another lens (Pentax SMC 135/2.5) onto the outer barrel backwards. It worked but the 58mm part of the hood blokes the lens filter ring, plus it caused vignetting on my film cameras. Then I got an Idea- take the metal thread ring out of a big rubber lens hood and stretch the hood over the zoom barrel. I used a 62mm adjustable depth rubber hood. Fit is tight and secure. Collapsed it is perfect for 70mm on full frame. Extended it was for the full focal length range on APS-C sensor bodies. Easy to remove and stretch back onto the barrel if needed. Cost was $10.
