I know that you mentioned variable nd, but if you are shooting longer exposures of landscape I would recommend a non-variable ND filter such as the Hoya NDX400, which is a 9 stop ND filter. I have one and it does an excellent job. I use it with my Pentax 16-85. Below is a shortcut to a listing for the 72 mm version (16-85 filter size). A 3 stop ND may be good for doing the famiiy related images you mentioned. I also have a 3 stop Hoya for that.

If anyone interested, there is a huge discount for WCC filters on Adorama, 85% for 3 stop ND filter:

Wine Country Camera Blackstone ND Filter 58mm ND 0.9 3-Stop

Looks like I'm going to pick a couple of them

Below is a path to an internet listing on Adorama for a 9 stop Manfrotto ND on sale for $19.88, normal price listed as $64.99. It is for the 58 mm filter size. There are also other sizes available.

Manfrotto 58mm Circular ND500 Lens Filter with 9 Stop MFND500-58

Sticky threads

I read some time ago that sticky filter threads can be easily remedied by using a pencil! So I tried it. I simply run the pencil tip around the filter thread (rather than the thread on the lens), and then using a blower just blow off any possible residue dust. It works great! No more sticky filter threads.
