I remember how I spent days, weeks searching for good backpack and end up with something that is just collecting dust in my room.
Lol. My mindshift rotation is still waiting to go for a walk. I need to get a water bladder for it. My issue is that I haven’t gone far enough to bother using it vs a smaller backpack and a smaller set of gear.

I like the laptop compartment in my camera backpack, lets me use it for more excursions where photography may not be the main focus.

You can use the compartment for otherstuff.

The padding offered by the laptop compartment, usually located close to the back, improves comfort anyway, so it's beneficial. Plus the feature is there for those who want it. It takes almost no volume, can serve for a tablet, e-reader, documents, a shirt folded flat, many other things.

A good use would be highly detailed maps of areas you're visiting, like Ordnance Survey's Explorer series.

You may want to remove excess padding if the back is already padded enough. This would yield more space.
