Turning an optical slave into a lightning trigger

Me and my friend are both really keen to photograph lightning, we are also interested in lightning triggers. We don't want to spend the money on something like this link and we don't have the know how to make one like this link

So we came up with the idea of possibly using an optical slave [like this one http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/auction-ebay/NewTrigger.jpg and turning it into a lightning trigger some how.

I was wondering if any one has tried this or has any tips for us?
