You can probably undo it with 90 deg. snap ring pliers. There are pin wrenches done for those, but they are hard to find and expensive for a one time use.

You can make your own. Get a piece of metal and couple steel dowels slightly smaller than the holes. Drill two holes (the same distance as those in the part) in the steel, insert the dowels and you're good to go. Because the part appears to be made of wood, you might be able to substitute a hard wood like oak for the piece of steel.

You can also make that kind of thing out of a paper clip, if it's not in there too hard, (though that looks like it's probably too big and tight for that) Or a couple of wire brads in some vise-grip needlenose pliers.

thanks all. i've found out that the tool i need is a face wrench which i can find on eekbay.. talking to a seller now..

flyer, you're right.. had not thought of that

tom, good idea..

rag, good idea but i'd need an 1/8'' thick clip..

also i'll need to use it whenever i use a different lens. currently i'm setting it up for my tamron 300/2.8+1.4TC so a 420/4

this is like a bush hawk.. got it off ebay for a grand total delivered for $18. i can't believe the milling on it.. it's chrome brass and milled aluminum.

the complete setup..

After you get it taken off, go to a decent machine shop and have a thumbscrew made to replace it or have a flat piece of metal welded to it so you can loosen/tighten it with your fingers only. It will be more practical but won't tighten as much as the original screw. By the way, very good deal. If I had seen it, you wouldn't have it...

at $18 delivered it was a steel.. this looks like someone designed it and got a mill to build it.. being a tool oriented guy i can really appreciate the build.. it's unreal how well made it is.. nowadays this would probably set you back about $500usd.. the tool i need is a face wrench.. just bought one off eekbay for $9.41 del......

i don't know what i was searching for but this popped up in a wrong category.. i was the only bidder..

Oh, wow. cool. I hadn't imagined that'd be something you'd want to change around regularly. Maybe you could make some kind of key, too, by grinding out from some key stock or something like that. Like the head of a rather big car key, so there'd be just a couple of little prongs on it? Perhaps a locksmith would be willing to give it a try?

A pair of needlenose pliers would have worked. I've ground the tips on them to do a variety of jobs.

I can't really tell, but if you ever lose your wrench, go into a golf store and see if a spike wrench would work.

If you wanted to embed the shutter switch into the handle the Tongue Switch might work very nicely.
