number of ways, how many you've got, the format and your attachment to them will govern the best way for you..

Some options (with some pros/cons):
- buy a flatbed scanner with slide/negative scanning abilities (cheaper initial $, not as good job as dedicated slide scanner but might be acceptable)
- Buy slide scanner (initial cost, time consuming if you've got a lot to do, can do them whenever you like, can sell scanner afterwards)
- slide copier attachment for your camera (similar to buying scanner... probably can't do negatives as easy)
- take them to a shop that offers scanning (easy solution, expensive if you've got a lot to do)
- send them to a overseas (China) bureu (cheap, will you see them again?)

I'm sure there's other solutions

Cheers, Nige

I use a HP G4050 scanner. It can scan 5strips of 6 frames or 20 mounted slides at a time. Since it takes so much time to do, I used to set my scanner with a batch of either 20 slides or 30 frames (unmounted) and let it do it's "job" at night while sleeping. It's a tedious job but when it needs to be done...Good luck!

This is quite adequate for transferring family snapshots from trannies to digital for archiving, using a P&S camera with a small diameter lens, and gets as good a result as most flatbed scanners.

If you're after editable pro-quality images from trannies, please ignore!

1) Buy a cheap hand-held slide-viewer.
2) If you have a desktop lightbox, stick it to this so that the lightbox becomes the backlight source. Otherwise, tape it to a window and wait for a bright day.
3) Set your P&S to MACRO, rest the end of the lens against the eyepiece, adjust zoom so that the trannie image is cropped in the viewfinder to your liking and take the shot.

NB: Unless things have changed in the last few years (since we bought ours) P&S models shoot in JPG by default, so there won't be much room for post-processing.

there is an ongoing thread in the Film SLR forum about this.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-film-slr-discussion/29463-wanting-...m-digital.html

I used a minolta Dimage II scanner 2880 DPI and it comes with a carrage for 4 slides and another for 6 frames on film (slide or negative)
if you have uncut rolls, some shops will process them relatively cheaply.

There was also an article in , (I think ) popular photography a few months ago about a place in india that does it for $0.19 per frame

flatbed scanners will help with numbers, some can do 12 at a time

but ultimate quality will be dependant on how much you are willing to pay, and unfortunetly in the sphere of film scanning, more money does equal more quality.

A lot depends on numbers i.e. how many you've got to do and what sort of quality you want the finished image.

There's all sorts of stuff out there, from inexpensive to obscene, just find one that suits your needs. Or if it's a once off deal to do the lot, maybe you could borrow or hire the right kit.
