Filter stuck in reduction ring

To save some money I bought 77mm polarising filter and set of adapters to fit it info smaller lenses. Unfortunately filter became stuck in 67mm ring. Situation is even worse as polariser is for wide angle lenses therefore there is not much of a metal part to take a good grasp.
What is the safest way to remove it without damaging the filter nor the adapter ?

It's never happened to me, but I think I would put it back on the lens fairly tight, and get a couple pieces of saran wrap, using one in one hand to keep the adaptor on the lens, and the other to get a grip on the polariser.

they do make filter wrenches for separating filters from each other and from reduction rings. I bought mine in the early 1980's

You could also try placing the filter and adapter into a bowl of warm water for a few minutes and then trying to unscrew them. If the materials are different enought they may expand at different rates allowing you to unscrew them. An alternative route would be to put them in the freezer for a couple of minutes and then trying to separate them.

One thing that I keep around for situations like this is some jar-opening pads, (There's a kind I see in a lot of supermarkets, kind of a white knobby soft rubber mesh,) ...You put one on a counter, then the filter on top of that, then apply downward pressure with the other.

Obviously, with a polarizer, you kind of want to be trying to grab onto the part that's fixed to the ring, too, but some downward pressure on the ring can help there, too.

The temperature change thing can help a lot, too,
