k20d with Alien Bee

That rhymes doesn't it? I have been using the k20d recently with B800's. The X-sync port on the k20d sure makes it easy! Here is a shot I took of the limited edition flame orange:

Studio strobes rock. I got a pair of 500 Ws Photogenics strobes at a thrift store for $20 (well, it was actually a gift...). Had to replace a few capacitors, but now they work great!

I like having the X-sync port on the K20D, but now I've switched to wireless for more freedom. Consider getting the Cybersyncs.

Just got my (first) AB800 and some modifiers on Wednesday. Love it. And with the CyberSyncs it's even better. Was out of town all weekend so only got to do some basic power tests with it, but so far ... I'm LOVIN it.

Yea, I have 2 of the AB800's and they are great units, I've got to check into those CyberSyncs though, should be a nice addition for wireless operation.

Right now I have 4 Photogenics (1000w/500w/500w/500w) and a AB800 (Alien Green). I want to pick up another AB800 and a Vagabond for a portable setup.

Question....

Is 800w enough for outdoor photography on a bright day?

Let's say I want the ambient outdoor light to appear dark and under exposed but have my subject well lit with the angle and shadows that I want.

I have two 150w strobe lamps that just don't cut it, other than that, they work super great indoors.

I haven't hauled mine outside yet, but I'm betting if you want to overpower the sun to blackout backgrounds the AB800 (true 320w/s) won't be powerful enough unless you're in pretty close. Forecast says Wednesday would be the first time I could test it my theory. April showers.... blah blah blah

For wider shots and/or with the lights backed off the subject I would think true 1600w/s would be the minimum and that means The Zeus.

I'm "patiently" waiting for Uncle Sam to pay off his free loan so I can order my 2nd AB800.

That depends on the size of the subject - aka the distance between the strobes and the subject and the reflector you use. You can easily create that effect with a off-camera flash gun, if you photograph flowers. For people it will be more difficult, but is possible with some labour.
