I picked up a bunch of filters for two 52mm lenses. However I have decided to buy the prime FA 50mm f1.4 to use in night photography. What will I need to hook up my new 52mm filters to it? Do I need a step up or step down ring?

Is the 50mm filter size 49mm or something else. To go up to 52mm you need a 49 to 52mm Step up ring.

Yea the 50mm lens is 49mm. So I will need to buy a 49-52mm step up ring to use my 52mm filters?

Yes, you need a 49 to 52mm step up ring.

Step-Up Adapter Rings:
Use to adapt larger diameter filters to a smaller diameter lens. For example, a 52mm to 62mm ring adapts 62mm filers to a lens that has 52mm threads.

You may find it more economical to buy a whole set:

49-52-55-58-62-67-72-77 mm Step Up Rings SET 7pcs - eBay (item 230319156130 end time May-12-09 06:54:37 PDT)

77-72-67-62-58-55-52-49 mm Step Down Rings SET 7pcs - eBay (item 330316640396 end time May-22-09 01:28:36 PDT)

That'll get you all the step-up/step-down rings you need to go from 49mm through 77mm and back - for about $25 - with free shipping...
