Corrupted Pentax RAW Files

I used a generic 4-Gb SD card that I owned before purchasing my K100D Super. It seem to work great for the first 90 images (saved in RAW format). Then when our female Sheltie gave birth to nine puppies, I grabbed my DSLR in the middle of the night and began recording the births. In the morning after shooting about 50 birthing images, I found out that the camera could not display the new images.

I am able to download the images to the HDD, but they do not display in Pentax Browser/Laboratory. The files are approx. 10-Mb in size, but do not display. Neither is there any image data.

I have tried a number of file recovery programs, but none are able to display the images. The files seem to be corrupted, not lost.

I replaced the card with a 16-Gb SDHC card and am able to shoot and download new images of the puppies as they grow.

Does anyone know how I can recover the ~50 images on the 4-Gb SD card?

I have read 'somewhere' recently that someone managed to save their corrupted images by converting them to DNG using the free Adobe converter - can't actually find where I read that now ...

I guess you could try it as it saves new copies of the files rather than doing anything with the originals.

You might want to watch out with those big SDHC cards. A lot of people (myself included) have had problems with them either corrupting files or refusing the save them entirely despite having space left.

In my case, I ran them through a Windows checkdisk, which found bad sectors towards the end of the disk. I think that may have been the cause. You may want to try that on your SDHC cards.

I can't help with that but one thing you may learn from the experience:

Never use/buy cheap/average quality SD cards (even good sd cards are fragile and unreliable, compared with CF cards for instance); go always for the best quality available and preferably choose capacities around 1/2Gb (downside: you may have to switch cards more often); also, never fill up your memory card to the limit.

Good luck with the file recovery.
