Problem with AF-500 and manual mode

Hey guys,

Picked up an AF-500 for my K100D, and I can't get it to stay in manual mode. It keeps thinking it is in TTL, which overexposes unless you bounce off the ceiling. I push the "mode" button to go from TTL to Manual mode, and set the power to 1/16th or whatever, but the moment I push the shutter button halfway, it goes back to TTL. And, as far as I can tell, does a full-power flash every time I press the shutter. This occurs whether I'm in P, Av, or M mode on the camera.
I read somewhere that even thought its a pentax flash, that it can only be used in manual with pentax digital cameras. Is this true? I initially bought this to play around with as a second flash to my (reliable) Sunpak 333, but I don't know what the hell I'm gonna do with this flash.
Any suggestions?

Read this. It looks like the earlier DSLR's support this flash and not the current one's. This could be because of P-TTL.

Note that the AF-500FTZ can only work in TTL mode or full manual flash exposure mode.

I have not tried to run mine in manual as I use it principlally on my *istD which supports TTL, newer bodies only support P_TTL.

I am surprised however that it won;r stay in manual

just as an update, now that I am back together with my camera gear.

Put the AF500FTZ om my K10D.

set the flash to manual mode, camera in manual mode (but with an A lens in the A position)

ALl my shots were dark irrespective of flash power or selected aperture. I think some how the body was sending a preflash signal.

turned it all off, and then back on and I had no problem with manual control of the flash, and exposure with the lens in either A where the body controlled aperture or by setting aperturee manually.

all seems to work for me, flash always stayed in manual

Thanks, Lowell. I finally got mine to stay in manual mode as well. The problem (i think) was that i had the flash in rear curtain sync, which, for some reason, was not compatible.
