Do you bring your tripod abroad? And which model?

How many of you carry a tripod abroad?

Do you own a lightweight one that use only abroad?

that may help me to choose between 190 and 055!

Thanks

I always carry my tripod when traveling. Mine is a fairly cheap, but fairly reliable, tripod. It's made of aluminum, has two bubble levels, comes with a carrying case, and was purchased at a hardware store It's supposed to be used for laser levels, but it's perfect for photography. Its only flaw is that it's a little low. But it still serves my purposes.

my travel pod is a heavy full sized one cut down to fit in a 22inch bag

For travelling I use a Velbon Sherpa Pro 545, 4-section CF tripod with a small Novoflex Ball 30 - capable of carrying about 4 kg safely. It is a bit on the short side, but very stable and both, lightweight and small to carry.

Hi

When travelling, I use a Giottos MTL9351 aluminium tripod...highly recommended, see mini-review below:

When I fly, no (I own a 190) - I take my monopd instead. When I drive, yes.

Only if space isn't an issue. Keeping the luggage the lightest possible is my first priority.

I was going to answer this poll but my preference is not listed. I did not want to choose never as I usually carry a monopod rather than a tripod when travelling.

I bought my first tripod knowing that I would need it for travelling.

As I didn't want to compromise with quality, I bought a Gitzo Traveller carbon tripod. Very light and compact when folded, high enough and very stable when unfolded.

It's not cheap, but quality comes at a price. And I can put a full sized tripod into my bag (a big leather bag not looking like a photogear bag) so it's also a plus when moving around and not wanting to be obnoxius.

When travelling I always have a "Cullmann Mini Magic" with me. It has a quite unique mechanism to fold the legs and fits into the laptop compartment of a backpack.

Since I got my 190 XPROB I've traveled abroad twice and I brought the tripod with me both times. If you're like me which few people are and don't mind carrying some extra kilos around it's a great tripod.

First one is at 2010-01-01 00:05 and the second one is a some day afterwards when you could actually get to the best place for viewing the Eiffel Tower... Man was it packed on New years Eve.

Anyway, I have my tripod kind of hanging on my backpack on some straps. The straps are meant for tightening the backpacks cargo, the pack itself, but it works like a charm.

My last trip I took a Gorillapod with a Vanguard ball head. I couldn't always get the exact shot I wanted but the thing is so small and can wrap around almost anything to give a stable platform. I also ended up taking shots from angles that I don't normally think of. I'm pleased with the results. Another advantage is that a couple of places I shot didn't allow tripods in, but nobody stopped me from using the Gorillapod.

This was taken from atop a fire hydrant.

Having previously taken an annoying heavy tripod on a trip I tried instead a monopod and found it also too heavy and annoying. So a few weeks back I bought a SLIK Sprint PRO II and took it on my last holiday. Never again.

From now on I will remember that Pentax rocks for its SR system and that a holiday is meant to be enjoyed. Even the extra weight of the lightest possible tripod is too much.

Professional gigs or purpose-led outings? Yes. Flights abroad? No.

And no, I did not lose a shot. Here are some from Albaicin, Granada, Spain.
