One theme that keeps coming up over and over, on this thread and others, is the issue of balance and handling, eps. with bigger lenses. So many people have mentioned this that it seems really significant. This was one of my primary concerns, and the feedback has been anything but ambiguous: posters are practically unanimous that the camera really isn't complete without the grip, small hands or large. The only negative was a build design issue, not a handling issue.

This seems like a sign.

Quick update: I followed y'alls suggestion and picked up a grip used (thanks so much, Scott!).

Ash was right, the build quality and design on D-BG2 is definitely better than D-BG1. It's still plastic, but feels less 'plasticky', less flimsy, more solid, less cheap toy-like. The buttons don't seem like cheapo addons like they do in its predecessor. The click-stops on the dials are more solid and it takes more force to rotate a dial, so there's less chance of getting a dial stuck in a detente and screwing with the camera's brains (happened a lot on D-BG1).

Balance is certainly different with the 16-50 and especially the 50-135. Although it makes the whole kit heavier, it makes the lenses seems lighter. Holding the lens on the COG in landscape orientation (fingers on zoom control, palm butting the lower front of the grip) doesn't seem as awkward and uncomfortable as D-BG1.

Will keep using it for a while to see how the 'fun factor' holds.
